Moyers with Chris Hedges…

If you want to get to know more about the world views of Chris Hedges, take a little time and watch this interview of Hedges by Bill Moyers.   It is well worth the time it takes to watch.

A quote from the interview by Hedges…

It’s the willingness on the part of people who seek personal enrichment to destroy other human beings… And because the mechanisms of governance can no longer control them, there is nothing now within the formal mechanisms of power to stop them from creating essentially a corporate oligarchic state.

This guy doesn’t mince words. Very informative the way he hones in on these specific communities (“sacrifice zones”).

The only problem I have is we are not completely powerless. We can pretend that both political parties are equally in bed with big business, but that’s not the case. One party at least is offering to balance out capitalism so that it works for more people. Yes, Democrats spread the wealth better!

So when Hedges talks about the coal-mining areas of West Virginia getting hosed by big industry by not spreading the wealth in the poor communties, I continue to ask myself why do people in these areas and all across the middle of the country keep voting Republican decade after decade? Even in 2008, as our entire financial, credit, and capitalist system was collapsing, a majority of white voters voted for the Republican. We have a Republican nominee running for office who epitomizes the unfair and unbalanced Wall Street Capitalism that is destroying our country, and the Presidential race is a dead heat! The Amercian people are screwing themsleves!

I completely understand where you are coming from and I, too, would say that there is a lesser of two evils. However, one needs only to look at the 2008 bailout of the banking institutions (strongly opposed by the public) to see where the true interests of the democrats really are. Don’t get me wrong, I think that the Repubs are far worse, but when the Dems are listening to Henry Paulson and not the economists of the country, there is breakdown.

Government should be the ‘buffer’ between the have’s and the have not’s.
