The Erosion of Freedom…for the sake of ‘security’

It is happening all over the world and yes, that includes America…freedom is eroding quickly.  The 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reads:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Of all of the amendments in the Bill of Rights, this is the one that Americans hold most sacred, yet the rights stipulated in the 1st Amendment are being taken away.  A great example is the man having to stop at police checkpoints, and while he refuses to cooperate, the question one must ask is “why are we being asked to prove citizenship?”   An article on reports on officials trying to prosecute reporters who report sensitive (revealing) information.  They claim that it is illegal because of “national security”.   One bite from the story (linked above)…

Sensenbrenner said when the legislation was revamped it must address the over-classification of government information and create a standard of liability for those who leak classified information to someone without a security clearance. He said the potential to prosecute reporters also must be considered.

“We’ve got the constitutional issue about the First Amendment protecting the freedom of the press, but there has to be a balance,” he said. “I feel that there has to be some self-restraint on the part of the press, saying we have this information but it would be tremendously damaging to our nation if it was published.”

Balance?  Does Mr. Sensenbrenner really mean “censorship”?  I understand the need for confidentiality, but truly, if they were working within the parameters of the law, would they need to hide it?
