As many of you are probably aware tomorrow is Canada Day. Up until recently it has just been a day filled with parades, laughter, flags, music, etc. For years my grandfather has put a float in our town’s parade. He always looks so proud decorating his old tractor and wagon with red and white decorations. As we all pile on this shaky float his face beams with happiness seeing the whole family come together. Normally, I just grin and bear being covered with temporary tattoos and crazy hats, but this year I do not know if I have it in me.

Over the last year I feel that so much of our national identity has been stripped away with legislation. Earlier in the year our wonderful British Columbian teachers were silenced with the passage of Bill 22. Ocean scientists are being silenced with Bill C-38. The proposition of Bill C-31…
