It’s Even Worse Than It Looks…Featuring: The Republican Party

As a one-time moderate conservative who has shifted away from the now-radically extreme Republican Party, I am more than a bit anxious and nervous about the election in November.  There is so much at stake right now and the radical right is absolutely frightening.   The idea that a party (that is now holding the country hostage every day) could possibly hold the House, Senate, and Presidency should scare the entire country.  From Mann and Ornstein’s book, It’s Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With The New Politics of Extremism :

The single-minded focus on scoring political points over solving problems, escalating over the last several decades, has reached a level of such intensity and bitterness that the government seems incapable of taking and sustaining public decisions responsive to the existential challenges facing the country.  The public may still revere the Constitution and support the system of government that it shaped, but this is more a measure of patriotism – love of country and pride in being an American – than of satisfaction with how it is working in practice.  All of the boastful talk of American exceptionalism cannot obscure the growing sense that the country is squandering its economic future and putting itself at risk because of an inability to govern effectively.  This is a time of immense economic peril, with the global economy at risk, sustained unemployment that can hollow out the work force in the future, a lack of any long-term fiscal policy than can be enacted, and the need for action in areas from climate change to immigration.

So as we are knee-deep in the economic peril, our government, and in turn the American people, are held hostage by a self-serving party of patriots whose only agenda is to bring down the presidency of Barack Obama.   Republican Senator Mitch McConnell (KY) even said it…

Our top political priority over the next two should years should be to deny President Obama a second term.

That is the TOP PRIORITY for Republicans.  They are not for the people…they are for themselves.   Again from “It’s Even Worse…”

Today’s Republican Party is an insurgent outlier.  It has become ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition, all but declaring war on the government.

This is no longer a party with integrity (yes, there are exceptions).  When you have party members like Mike O’Neal (Kansas House of Representatives Speaker) making comments like “Mrs. YoMama” and also calling her the Grinch, it doesn’t portray a party that has any honor.  Even worse than that was his forwarding of an email that asked for Psalm 109:8-9 to be applied to the President – “May his days be few;  may another take his place of leadership.May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.”  That is truly terrible…and this coming from an elected official.

The American people need to hold the politicians accountable for their words and actions.  They need to demand bi-partisanship in Congress.  Extremism in a democracy will never work and the American people need to wake up and realize what these people are doing.  They need to see these people for who they are and what they stand for.   The Tea Party and its elitism need to go.

“In a democracy the poor will have more power than the rich, because there are more of them, and the will of the majority is supreme.” – Aristotle

Well said. The situation is becoming frightening for what may happen in the future. Let’s hope the voters wake up before November.

Unfortunately thus far, the Tea Party Republicans have only been rewarded for their behavior. The job numbers this morning show how they have Obama boxed in. They blame him, while simultaneously blocking rational efforts the government should take during a normal recession; much less an historical one. Yet they were swept into power in 2010, and polls show they are at worst running even with the Dems.

They do have him boxed in, but I think people are waking up to this. Following the debt-ceiling crisis, the approval rating of Congress was below 10%. The number of Dem Senate seats up this year frightens me though.

I have read in various places that a good number of voters in the US are not allowed to vote for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons are ID related issues, seems Student ID’s are ineligable yet firearms permits are. Perhaps some kind of card displaying the voters IQ would help as having the power to vote should not be left in the hands of complete morons!

Reblogged this on The Last Of The Millenniums and commented:
‘No Compromise’ does not a Republic make.
